Roof Cleaning Made Simple: 3 Easy Steps to a Healthier Roof

Over time, moss and lichen can take over your roof, making it look tired and potentially causing long-term damage. The good news? Roof cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right approach, your roof can be restored safely and effectively.

Here are the three easy steps we use to bring roofs back to life and keep them brighter, happier, and healthier for years to come.

Removing the moss!

For this roof clean, we used an acrylic plate on the end of an extendable carbon fiber pole to remove the moss from the safety of scaffolding.

Step 1: Scrape Away the Majority of Moss and Lichen

Using the scrape and biocide method for this example, the first step is to remove the bulk of the moss and lichen from the roof. Using specialist roof cleaning tools, the moss is carefully scraped away without damaging the tiles.

This manual removal instantly improves the look of the roof, furthers prevention before moss lifts or cracks tiles and massively helps stop moisture from being trapped on the roof surface.

Post moss removal.

Step 2: Tidy Up – Ground Clean, Gutters Cleared, Waste Removed

Roof cleaning can be messy, as it’s always surprising how much moss comes down from the roof, even if it doesn’t look like a great deal!

We clear the debris from the gutters, ensuring they’re left in running order. We then clear up the moss and debris that falls onto the ground, lower pitches roofs, etc. to ensure we left it at least as tidy as we found it.

As the waste is moss, plant life, it can be spread across the garden, put into the green bin, or even the compost pile for healthy soil down the line.

Step 3: Apply a Biocide Treatment for Long-Lasting Results

The final step is applying a biocide treatment to the roof. This chemical solution targets the remaining moss, lichen, and algae that often can’t be seen from the ground. It also acts as a preventative measure towards re-growth for some time.

The remaining organic growth is destroyed immediately, then, over time, the rain and wind weather the remains of those over time. Leaving the roof in a brighter, happier, and healthier state overall!

For this to be effective, we need it to not be raining whilst the biocide is applied, then ideally, not rain for at least the next few hours as it soaks and then dries into the tile.

To finish off the roof cleaning for this venture, the biocide.

Over time, this roof will look even better.
